Editorial Review of Hit Parade
Keller is friendly. Industrious. A bit lonely, sometimes. If it wasn't for the fact that he kills people for a living, he'd be just your average Joe. The inconvenient wife, the troublesome sports star, the greedy business partner, the vicious dog, he'll take care of them all, quietly and efficiently. If the price is right.
Like the rest of us, Keller's starting to worry about his retirement. After all, he's not getting any younger. (His victims, on the other hand, aren't getting any older.) So he contacts his "booking agent," Dot, up in White Plains, and tells her to keep the hits coming. He'll take any job, anywhere. His nest egg needs fattening up.
Of course, being less choosy means taking greater risks—and that could buy Keller some big trouble. Then again, in this game, there are plenty of opportunities for some inventive improvisation . . . and a determined self-motivator can make a killing.

Review Summary: totally new main character
Review: Great Lawrence Block humor & story line. Couldn't put it down. In fact, ordered other books in this series.

Review Summary: A worthwhile read
Review: This book mostly reads like a collection of short stories in that each chapter or two can stand alone--but there is a more or less continuous thread connecting them. This is a must-read before getting to the latest (? last) of the Keller stories, Hit and Run. Block is always a good read, sometimes a great read, so I recommend it highly to all his fans.

Review Summary: Disappointing.
Review: I enjoyed the previous John Keller-Hit Man books by Lawrence Block, who has been one of my favorite authors for many years. But this one fell kind of flat. In the earlier books, Keller has a certain charm, despite being a professional killer. For some reason, in this outing Keller comes across simply cold-blooded and inhuman. I think the author took away Keller's formerly interesting personality and all of his charm. This book is not really a novel, but rather a series of short stories about various hits Keller is hired for. Perhaps this is why Keller's character suffers this time out. I am hoping for a much better book with the latest Keller novel, HIT AND RUN.

Review Summary: First Time Reading This Author
Review: Not usually my type of book, but really enjoyed it. I will now have to get the others in the series. I thought the concept of the story was great, a stamp-collecting hit man! Who would have thought something like that up?!

Review Summary: The Stamp Collector
Review: This is the 3rd book in the series and Lawrence Block has developed this character to the point where he is almost family. He is less complicated than the Matt Scudder character, but still has the same issues that we can all identify with. There is a mix of humor, sarcasm, deep thought and the everyman we can identify with. It's just a job, it's not his life, but we are what we do. The 4th in the series should be out next month and based on the last three will not be anything less than another hit, no pun intended. I can think of three series that rank in my top five. Sandford's Lucas Davenport and Lawrence Block's Matt Scudder and John Keller. We have two heroes and one odd duck. A killer with a conscience and a warm character. Heck, he likes dogs so what else do you need? This is the second time I have bought the book, I don't think I can recommend it any higher than that. I guess just buy it once and don't lend it out. If that happens again, just make that call to White Plains.
