Editorial Review of No Time for Goodbye

The house was deathly quiet. That was the first sign that something was terribly wrong. Fourteen-year-old Cynthia Bigge woke that morning to find herself alone. Her family—mother, father, and brother—had vanished without a word, without a note, without a trace. Twenty-five years later, Cynthia is still looking for answers. Now she is about to learn the devastating truth.

From critically acclaimed author Linwood Barclay comes a new suspense thriller that strikes to the core of our most primal fear. What if you woke one day to find your entire life had changed? If everyone you loved had disappeared overnight without so much as a chance to ask why?

Cynthia and Terry Archer still live in Milford, Connecticut, not far from the old Bigge house on Hickory Street. With a solid marriage and a young daughter, the Archers seem on track for a successful future. But the questions raised by Cynthia’s past still haunt her, and her obsession to find the answers threatens to destroy everything they’ve worked for. For Cynthia, there can be no closure until she finds out why her family disappeared—and how they could have left her behind.

Terry thinks the segment on the popular TV crime-stopper program Deadline is a mistake. But his wife hopes that someone watching will have a lead to her missing family. Sure enough, it’s Cynthia who spots the strange car cruising the neighborhood, hears the untraceable phone calls, and discovers the ominous “gifts.” And as Cynthia’s nerves begin to unravel, no one’s innocence is guaranteed, not even her own. By the time the first body is found, it’s clear that her past is more of a mystery than she ever imagined—or may ever survive.

Someone has returned to this Connecticut town to finish what was started twenty-five years ago. And by the time Terry and Cynthia discover the killer’s shocking identity, it will be too late even for goodbye.

Review Summary: Almost A 5 But Not Quite
Review: First of all, I don't read novels. After Truman Capote died I vowed never to read them. Although I do read Dominick Dunne's books. But they're not really novels. They're always based on real people. I heard a radio advertisement for this book two weeks ago and my interest was really tweaked. I ordered it, and when it arrived, I sat on the sofa until I had finished every page.

A little advice to future readers: Don't read it all in one sitting even though you desperately want to know how it ends. Pace yourself if you can. I didn't give it 5 stars because the ending was a little disappointing for me. You twist and turn throughout the entire book. Is she telling the truth? Did she murder her family? Was it the guy she went out with when she was a teen-ager and she got in trouble with her family? The ending will surprise you, but it was a let down for me.

I would love to see this made into a movie. I don't know whom I would choose to star. Perhaps Hillary Swank. For glamour, Charlize Theron. But Swank would do it justice. It really would make an excellent film. I'd do something about the ending, though.

Review: NO TIME FOR GOODBYE

This is my first Linwood Barclay book and it will not be the last! This guy can write! Barclay grabs your attention at the very beginning of the book and never lets loose of his hold until you have closed the book for the final time!

Cynthia Bigge is 14 years old and quite the girl. She likes to party and likes the boys. She sneaks out one night, her dad finds her and confronts her, they have a terrible argument. When she wakes up in the morning, her entire family -- dad, mom, younger brother, are all gone. Never to be seen again.

Cynthia is raised by her aunt and tries, mostly unsuccessfully, to get on with her life. She marries, has a daughter. She is seeing a doctor to help her muddle through her life. Cynthia cannot let go of the fact that her family is gone. She is pretty paranoid and at times the reader begins to wonder if she is sane.

Upon the 25th anniversary of her family's disapperance, a live crime TV show runs a special on the story. This opens up a bag of worms and Cynthia and her family's lifes are turned into total chaos! The past slams into the present and the reader never knows what is the truth or what are lies. Good reading!

This is a good book. The reader is taken on a great ride of lies, surprises, uncovering the truth. Just when you think you have something figured out, the author throws another branch on the fire and you are back to square one, wondering what is going on?!!!

Happily, there are plenty more books by this author. He has a series but has a few books that stand alone, such as NO TIME FOR GOODBYE. You would be smart to check this out. ENJOY!

Thank you!
Pam

Review Summary: No Time for Any Greeting Words, Once You Start You Won't Want to Communicate With Anyone Until You've Finished!
Review: I hadn't read any of Barclay's previous novels before picking up this one but after finishing this great book I certainly plan to. Barclay combines the thriller and mystery genres into one with this very interesting plot idea. There aren't that many books in either genre that once you start you just can't put down but Barclay has accomplished just that with No Time for Goodbye.

In No Time for Goodbye we are taken into a night in the life of Cynthia Bigge, a rebellious 14 year old teenage girl who likes to drink, party and make out with older boys. When her father pulls her out of her boyfriends car in a wasted state and brings her home she slams the door and tells him she wishes he was dead. When she awakens the next day prepared for the onslaught from her parents she discovers no one is home. Over the next twenty years or so where the story takes up as a narration by her husband Terry, no one has ever returned home to this normal suburban house in Connecticut. In fact no one has ever heard from Cynthia's father, mother or brother ever again.

Cynthia has grown up, has a daughter of her own but leads quite a paranoid life. One Terry does not like at times, but accepts and humours. As a tabloid crime show does a story on the anniversary of the family's disappearance new facts are brought to the table. As is her father's hat one night while the couple are out chasing a new lead. Other weird developments are occurring as well, some quite sinister which will question in Terry's mind if his wife is actually an innocent victim, or even if she is sane at all. If she is innocent then someone seems set on discrediting her and isn't too happy that they're digging into the past.

A sensational read. If you like Harlan Coben, Joseph Finder , James Siegel, Matthew Klein and the other masters of this genre, then you'll love No Time for Goodbye!
